A rare Scottish silver & agate halberd kilt pin
A rare antique Victorian Kilt Pin in the form of a medieval Halberd (Two handed long Axe & Pike). The axe head and bottom tip of the shaft have attractive engraved pattern with plain back. The shaft is of banded Scottish agate. As was common in the 19th century silver jewellery was rarely hallmarked.

A Halberd as in prominent use during the 14th and 15th centuries but has continued in use as a ceremonial weapon to the present day. First recorded as "hellembart" in 1279, the word halberd possibly comes from the German words Halm (staff) or Helm (helmet), and Barte (axe).
The halberd consists of an axe blade topped with a spike mounted on a long shaft. It always has a hook or thorn on the back side of the axe blade for grappling mounted combatants.
Condition Notes
In excellent condition throughout - the pin is tight and fastens well. The silver is free of any blemish.
This is a second hand antique jewellery piece and will have some imperfections. Antique jewellery was primarily hand crafted(modern jewellery is more often than not cast made). They are therefore unique pieces.
