  • Synopsis

Balmerino is a parish located in the Kingdom of Fife, Scotland, situated along the southern shore of the Firth of Tay, approximately 4 miles southwest of Newport-on-Tay and 5 miles southwest of Dundee.

A significant landmark in the parish is Balmerino Abbey, founded between 1227 and 1229 by monks from Melrose Abbey under the patronage of Ermengarde de Beaumont, widow of King William the Lion, and her son, King Alexander II. The abbey served as a center of monastic life until it suffered damage during the Reformation in the 16th century, leading to its decline and eventual ruin.

The parish's rich history has been documented in works such as "Balmerino and Its Abbey: A Parish History" by James Campbell, first published in 1867 and updated in 1899. This comprehensive account provides detailed insights into the area's past, covering aspects from prehistoric times through the establishment and operation of the abbey, to the lives of its Protestant ministers and landed proprietors.
