City Poems by Alexander Smith

Alexander Smith  (1829 - 1867) was born in Kilmarnock before moving his parents moved to Glasgow. He spent most of his early life working in the cotton trade which he writes about in the largely autobiographical  "A Boy’s Poem" in this volume.

Smith married Flora Macdonald in 1857 – an indirect relation to the Saviour of Bonnie Prince Charlie – at Ord House on the isle of Skye.

Essentially self-taught - Alexander Smith became known as a key example of the Spasmodic School of poets.

A rare 1st edition in an attractive binding - the cover boards are beautifully designed with black embellishments and gilt titles. There is some loosdeness in the binding but otherwise the inside pages are bright and clean throughout.
