  • Synopsis

Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936) was a Scottish politician, writer, and adventurer, known for his outspoken advocacy of Scottish and South American independence, his colorful personality, and his contributions to Scottish literature.

Graham was born into a wealthy Scottish family and educated at Harrow and Cambridge, but he rejected his privileged upbringing and instead dedicated his life to political activism and exploration. In 1886, he became the first socialist member of parliament in the UK, representing the constituency of North-West Lanarkshire.

Graham was a passionate advocate for Scottish independence and played a key role in the formation of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in 1934. He was also a staunch supporter of the South American independence movements and was one of the first Europeans to explore the Andean region of Argentina and Peru.

In addition to his political activism, Graham was also a prolific writer, publishing a number of books and articles on a wide range of topics, including travel, politics, and Scottish history and culture. His best-known works include "The Ipané" (1899), a novel set in the Argentinean pampas, and "Mirages" (1901), a collection of essays on South America.

Overall, Cunninghame Graham was a key figure in the Scottish and South American independence movements, as well as a pioneering explorer and writer.
