Synopsis
The Island of Scarp lies of the west coast of North Harris in the outer Hebrides. After four centuries of human settlement the last of the native population left in 1971.
The author of this book - Angus Duncan was born in South Harris in 1888 and was brought up on Scarp where his father was the Schoolmaster. After a University education and active service in the First World War, he served in the Scottish Ministry but continued his interest in Gaelic Scotland and more especially Scarp writing the story of his boyhood which has become a part of this "memoire."
Edited by one of his sons, his manuscripts became this book with an added appendix and notes. With old and new photographs, the work describes the life of the island community and a way of life now all but lost; the land and sea harvests, the folktales, customs and occasions.
