Synopsis
The Aberdeen-Angus breed is one of the oldest and most widely recognized beef cattle breeds in the world. It originated in the northeastern part of Scotland in the early 19th century, and was developed from local cattle breeds through selective breeding.
The Aberdeen was a small, hornless breed that was native to northeastern Scotland. It was known for its hardiness and adaptability to the harsh Scottish climate. The Angus, on the other hand, was a larger breed with distinctive black coloration and also native to the region.
The breed became increasingly popular throughout Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom in the 19th century, and was eventually exported to other parts of the world, including both North and South America and Australia. Today, the Aberdeen-Angus breed is recognized as one of the oldest and most important beef cattle breeds in the world, prized for its meat quality and adaptability to different environments.
This edition originated from the first known systematic account of any breed of cattle in book "On Polled Cattle: Together with a General History of the Breed" by Robert Bruce, published in 1882 by William Blackwood and Sons.
Robert Bruce was a Scottish cattle breeder and agricultural writer who was instrumental in promoting the Aberdeen-Angus breed and the polled cattle movement more generally. In "On Polled Cattle," Bruce provides a comprehensive overview of the polled cattle breeds of Scotland and England, including the Aberdeen-Angus breed and its history of development.
MacDonald and Sinclair narrowed the focus of the book down to the breed that was becomning by far the most relaible one - The Aberdeen-Angus - their revised edition detailing the history of the breed and its development and evolution over time. It discusses the various breeders and organizations that have contributed to the breed's success, as well as the challenges and setbacks that it has faced throughout its history. The book also includes information on the breed's physical characteristics, management practices, and breeding strategies.
