In 1961, Co-editor of Saltire Society's quarterly magazine "New Saltire, " Giles Gordon, commissioned Dr. C. M. Grieve (Hugh MacDiarmid) to write an article on the Scottish philosopher David Hume to commemorate the 250th anniversary of his birth. The article was not considered suitable for publication by the magazine's administration. Considering it a "preposterous decision" Giles Gordon promptly resigned and had the article printed privately for readers to judge for themselves.
