John Murray(1715-1777) was born in Broughton in Peeblesire in a family of respectable antiquity. His father William was not a Jacobite and was important in the mining at Strontian in Adnamurchan. After being educated in Edinburgh and having travelled through Europe he returned to Scotland where his links to Massonic lodges brought him into contact with the Jacobites. He was then to become a key member and administrator in the Jacobite rising in 1745.
