  • About the Author

Duncan Ban MacIntyre, also known as Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir, was a Scottish Gaelic poet who lived during the 18th century. He was born in 1724 in the town of Druimliaqhart in Glenorchy

MacIntyre was raised in a family of farmers and crofters and received little formal education. Nevertheless, he developed a love of poetry at an early age and began composing his own verses in Gaelic. His first published work was a poem called "Moladh Beinn Dobhrain" ("Praise of Ben Doran"), which he wrote in honor of a local mountain.

Over the course of his life, MacIntyre wrote a large body of poetry that explored a range of themes, including nature, love, religion, and politics. His most famous work is the long poem "Praise of Ben Dorain" ("Moladh Beinn Dobhrain"), which celebrates the beauty and majesty of the Scottish landscape.

MacIntyre's poetry is known for its intricate wordplay, rich imagery, and musicality. His verses often use traditional Gaelic meters and are meant to be sung or recited in a musical style known as "puirt-a-beul" (mouth music).

Despite his literary talents, MacIntyre struggled with poverty throughout his life and was forced to work as a farm laborer and a cattle drover to make ends meet. He died in 1812 at the age of 88, but his poetry continues to be celebrated as a significant contribution to Scottish Gaelic literature.
