A collection of the letters of Samuel Rutherford.
About the Author
Samuel Rutherford was a prominent Scottish Presbyterian minister and theologian born in Nisbet, Scotland in 1600. He was educated at Edinburgh University and became a professor of theology there in 1639.
Rutherford was known for his staunch defense of Reformed theology and his opposition to the beliefs and practices of the Anglican Church. He was a key figure in the Scottish Covenanting movement, which sought to defend the independence of the Scottish Church from English interference.
Rutherford is perhaps best known for his influential work "Lex, Rex", which argued that the law is above the king and that even monarchs are subject to the rule of law. This idea was highly controversial at the time, as it challenged the traditional view of the divine right of kings.
In 1636, Rutherford was summoned to appear before the Scottish Privy Council on charges of sedition and was subsequently banished from Edinburgh. He spent the next two years in exile in Aberdeen, where he continued to write and teach.
After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Rutherford's works were banned and he was posthumously excommunicated by the Church of Scotland. However, his influence continued to be felt among Scottish Presbyterians and his writings have remained popular among theologians to this day.
Rutherford died in 1661, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important figures in Scottish Presbyterianism and a key defender of the Reformed faith.
Condition Notes
A very good copy generally - some slight looseness in the binding but still remains good, bright and clean pages with usual age-related tanning. There is previous owner gift dedication with date (1926) in ink on the inside end-paper.
