  • Additional Product Information

The Chronicle of Lanercost details the Wars for Scottish Independence from 1272 to 1346.

As part of the introduction to the book the Rev. James Wilson explores the origin of this medieval Latin manuscript and attributes it to various authors from the Augustinian Priory of Lanercost in Cumbria, England.

Although the Chronicle is largely about Scottish Independence, it digresses frequently into English and Scottish life at the time. Major life events, such as the deaths, of kings, political officials, clergy, and the pope are detailed in the text alongside the military accounts.

There are 8 black & white plates of various key places and a facsimile of the an extract of the original manuscript.

  • Condition Notes

This is a handsome edition which was offered as a retirement gift to the Superintendant of Education of Carlisle by members of staff in 1929 - there is a full page dedication on the front end paper. There is also a newspaper cutting affixed opposite dated 1937 and is an obituary to the author Sir H. E. Maxwell.

The red covers boards have some fade and does the spine with some fading of the gilt titles. But otherwise the book remains very well bound.

The inside pages are bright and clean throughout. The top paper edge is gilded.
