On his death Burn's widow handed the manuscripts to his biographer - Dr. Currie.
In 1913 the Liverpool Athenaeum decided to sell them and they eventually fell into the hands of an American dealer - John Gribbel who subsequently gifted them back top Scotland to stay there forever.
Before parting with the manuscripts Gribbel made 150 copies and had the printing plates destroyed. This reprint in 1973 was made possible by the National Library of Scotland.
