  • Synopsis

"Life of Robert Burns" is a biography of the Scottish poet Robert Burns first published in 1828. The book is considered an important work of literary biography.

It was one of the earliest and most comprehensive biographies of Burns, drawing on a wide range of sources, including Burns's own letters and journals, as well as the recollections of friends and acquaintances. As such, it provided a detailed and nuanced account of Burns's life and works that was previously unavailable.

Secondly, Lockhart's biography played a significant role in shaping Burns's reputation and legacy. At the time of its publication, Burns was already an established and celebrated poet, but his personal life had been marred by controversy and scandal. Lockhart's sympathetic portrayal of Burns as a man of genius and integrity helped to rehabilitate his reputation and cement his status as one of Scotland's greatest literary figures.

The work is notable for its literary style and quality. Lockhart was himself a writer and critic of some renown, and his biography of Burns is regarded as a well-crafted and engaging work of literature in its own right. It has been praised for its evocative descriptions of Scottish life and landscape, as well as its sensitive treatment of Burns's poetry and personal struggles.

  • About the Author

John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854) was a Scottish writer, critic, and biographer. He was born in the town of Cambusnethan in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford.

Lockhart is best known for his literary criticism and biographical works. He was a prominent contributor to Blackwood's Magazine, a leading literary periodical of the time, and his reviews and essays were widely respected for their insight and wit. He also wrote several biographies, including a highly-regarded life of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, as well as works on other notable figures of the day, such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Sir Walter Scott.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Lockhart was also a successful lawyer, and he served as the editor of the influential Quarterly Review from 1825 to 1853. He was married to the novelist and diarist, J.G. (or Jane) Wilson, who wrote under the pseudonym "Christopher North." The couple had five children, including the noted art critic and historian, Walter Armstrong.
