  • Synopsis

These two volumes comprise two early 19th century novels:

The Provost by John Galt is a novel of Scottish humour published in 1822. It is considered his masterpiece and one of the first political novels in the English language. It is an ironic look at the career of a small-town merchant and politician, James Pawkie, who becomes the provost (mayor) of Irvine, Scotland. The novel follows his rise from a humble apprentice to a wealthy and influential leader, and his dealings with various factions, rivals, and schemes in the town. The novel is a satire of the corruption, hypocrisy, and self-interest of the Scottish society and government of the time

The last of the lairds by John Galt is a novel of Scottish humour published in 1826. It is the sequel to The Ayrshire Legatees, and follows the life and opinions of Malachi Mailsetter, the last surviving laird of the ancient family of Gudeman’s Croft. The novel depicts his struggles to maintain his dignity and estate in the face of poverty, debt, and changing times. The novel is a satire of the decline of the old Scottish gentry and the rise of the new commercial class
