  • Synopsis

Ring of Bright Water  is an autobiographical work published in 1960. It tells the story of Maxwell’s life with otters on the remote west coast of Scotland, where he bought a cottage called Camusfearna. The book describes his adventures and challenges with his otter companions, especially Mijbil and Edal, who he brought from Iraq and Canada respectively. The book is a classic of nature writing, full of humour, beauty and emotion.

The Rocks Remain by Gavin Maxwell is the sequel to Ring of Bright Water, published in 1963. It continues the story of Maxwell’s life with otters on the west coast of Scotland, focusing on the different personalities and behaviours of his new otter friends, Edal, Teko, Mossy and Monday. The book also reveals the challenges and struggles that Maxwell faced in his personal and professional life, such as his mental health, his financial troubles, his failed projects and his relationship with his neighbours.

Raven Seek Thy Brother by Gavin Maxwell is the final book in his otter trilogy, published in 1968. It recounts the last years of Maxwell’s life on the west coast of Scotland, where he faced tragedy, loss and hardship. The book describes how his house at Sandaig was destroyed by fire, killing his beloved otter Edal, and how he moved to a lighthouse keeper’s cottage on the nearby island of Eilean Bàn. The book also reflects on his experiences with other animals, such as eagles, ravens and sharks, and his travels to Morocco and Sicily
